The Lord Thomson of Monifieth, died 87, he was a formidable Labour moderate who ended his career a
Liberal Democrat.
George began his working life editing The Dandy. He went on to hold several cabinet posts under
Harold Wilson, came to champion Britain's membership of the European Community and was one of the
UK's first Commissioners.
George married Grace Jenkins in 1948; Lady Thomson and their two daughters survive him.
